People often ask how I prepare to record a book. Here is part of the answer. On the top, my notes on each character, as s/he appears in the book (in this case, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.) Character notes are essential for a book with 58 speaking characters. Below, a random page with notes about how to deliver a line, or the nature of a new characters voice, or an N standing for Nathaniel Bowditch, alerting me that Nat is the one saying this dialogue. Such page notes help me read smoothly without having to stop to figure things out in the studio. With non-fiction prose, I dont have to figure out characters, but I still occasionally make notes in the margins. Better yet, I record while reading the book from my laptop so that I dont have to turn pages, which saves me from having to edit out the sounds of the pages turning.
