People often ask me: How was Africa? More than words rushing to - TopicsExpress

People often ask me: How was Africa? More than words rushing to my head, emotions rush from my heart. Perhaps this poem, that came to me late one night (inspired by dear LeeLee), can show you insight into How Was Africa... Africa What was it about you? That drew me to you? Was it the unknown? Or perhaps the known. Weve all heard about you, Weve all felt pity for you... Until we met you. Until I met you. Then I knew you, Then you knew me, Through and through, To the core, Through and through, Through a boy, An orphan boy The way he reached out for my hand with one finger, The way he would look me in the eyes and linger. I often had to turn away, Before the tears would break and stray, Because in that moment I knew, That it was all because of you, gentle child, That my life would begin to change We may never be together again But those moments were not in vain, For in those moments you planted a seed You gave me a new understanding, All of a sudden it became very plain Life is not about what we can do for others But about who we can be for others, And you were a brother to all the others, You belonged to a beautiful family You showed me that I belonged to a beautiful family That I belonged to those around me, That I can be who I need to be, As long as I open my eyes to see That those around me are my family That you are my family I know what drew me to you, Africa It was my need for a different view People ask me, How was Kenya? I simply can only say this: Have you ever heard a song, Have you ever thought to yourself: That artist must have been in my head, That artist knows me well! My artist must have been in my head My artist knows me well, God, you knew what would fill my heart God, my cup runneth over God, thank you for embracing me as your daughter We all see needs, they are around us everywhere. But this one thing I learned, we arent meant to do things for the need we see, but we are to be someone for the person we see involved in that need. Instead of thinking: should I give this person money, is this the organization I should give my money to? We should be asking: Could I possibly be this persons friend or advocate (without expecting anything in return)? Does this organization encourage me to be a better citizen where I am while I support this cause abroad? While I was in Kenya, I was so encouraged to grow in love and love as Christ did, without thought of myself and without thought of too far down the future. And in return, what I was blessed with is enriched relationships, immense amounts of love. Sometimes I spread myself out too far, and I let a lot of people down, but if you can perfect what I can only imagine, then my thoughts would not be in vain.
