People often ask me about mentoring so here is the scoop ... I LOVE teaching photography and I hold nothing back. Truly, my current lead assistant and videographer is a former student. Many admired photographers here in TX are former students. I dont withhold any info b/c I believe even if you knew every trick I do your work will always be different b/c there is so much more to a photograph than technical skills. Most of the time I do this one on one. Two very practicals reasons for this .. Im too busy actually working to make organizing instructional workshops my main focus. Second, Ive only been approached by a couple organizers to seriously bring me on board as a hired instructor. A third more philosophical reason is I believe lighting is the easiest part about photography .. dealing with people is the real skill and that is better one on one, not 22 photographers on 1 model. Anyway, I also get asked about assisting. I focus in on glamour so its not often that I need full time assistants as the sets are pretty modest and such- but when I do have jobs that require assistants, I always offer those to people I have trained. I hope that makes sense. Rates? Bottom line is I dont seek to make extra profit teaching people. I just charge what it costs me to not actually be working and make teaching you my focus for that hour, day, weekend, etc. I enjoy teaching that much ... but I prefer to do it with people who have at least some skin in the game. Its always affordable and always attainable for folks who want it .. .just like posing for me.
