People often ask me for my antiquated opinion about modern day drum corps. I didnt watch the DCI event last night, but seeing the images of corps on the field in Indy made me remember my first impression of drum corps in a dome back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Listening to drum corps in a dome to me is akin to watching drum corps outdoors on a very foggy night. You get general intent, but contrast and intricacy are a wash. The highest volume levels may be enhanced, but freight trains are loud. Max volume without musical detail and dynamic contrast is not entertaining to me. Drum line clarity is reduced to reputation, not that evenings performance. There are some very talented folks still involved in the activity, but some of the externals (i.e. dome stadium venues, screaming soloists playing into microphones and brass lines supported by synthesized bass) have diluted the level of artistic accomplishment that these young men and women have worked so hard to achieve. I still go to one show every year. There is some real greatness being displayed on the field. Just let them show what they can do without all of the safety nets in place. Now, get the hell off my lawn! (That being said... Go Scouts)
