People often complain that Jack Schiffs later Batman stories were spoiled by their reliance on unbelievable Science Fiction concepts. Yet I cant help thinking its the style rather than the content that they are really objecting to. For all its sophisticated moody artwork it seems to me that the landmark issue of Detective Comics #400 which featured Kirk Langstroms transformation into Man-Bat contains the same basic plot as the cover story of Batman #154, published just seven years earlier in 1963. The fact that the intervening years had also taken in Carmine Infantinos New Look and the TV craze only goes to show how rapidly fashions change in the world of comic books where few readers stick around for more than a handful of years, and where todays fan favorite creator can all-to-quickly become tomorrows burned out has-been!
