People often make the mistake of assuming that they are surrounded - TopicsExpress

People often make the mistake of assuming that they are surrounded by people just like themselves. Case in point, notice that people who are often accused of being naïve or “too trusting” of others are often trustworthy themselves? The reason they assume that others are “on the up and up” with them because when they deal with others they are “on the up and up”. They don’t automatically assume, for example, that others are often lying to them because they don’t often lie to others. I want you to keep that mind the next time you hear someone say that they have a difficult time “trusting people” or that they are highly suspicious of the motivations of others. Again, people often make the assumption that they are surrounded by people like themselves. People have a difficult time trusting others because they are untrustworthy. Think about it. When you dated that person who was always suspicious of you cheating, unless you gave them reason to be, their issue wasn’t with you, they were telling you about themselves. It wasn’t that they didn’t trust you because of anything you did…it was because they assumed you were just like them.
