People often mistake my lack of interest in politics for apathy. I would instead call it exasperation, brought on by decades of witnessing cycles like this: 1) Uber, et al are crushing traditional taxi services in the marketplace because consumers strongly prefer them and vote with their wallets. 2) Members of the established order (the taxi lobby) pay off politicians in a temporarily successful effort to maintain the status quo. 3) Palm-greased elected officials unashamedly rush to their donors aid, passing a flurry of laws that screw over their constituents but appease their benefactors. 4) Over time Uber, et al will succeed anyway due to marketplace forces beyond the control of mere government operatives. 5) Politicians will pose for photo ops with the winners during the next election cycle and say something like I was on their side the whole time. 6) Lather, rinse, repeat. Apathy? Nah... washingtonpost/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/07/31/the-taxi-industry-is-crushing-uber-and-lyft-on-the-lobbying-front-3500-to-1/?hpid=z17
