People power still the best way to right, wrongs Seeney’s pay rise backflip is victory for Queenslanders LNP Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney’s backflip today on obscene MP pay rises is a victory for Queenslanders, says the Queensland Council of Unions. Queensland Council of Unions President John Battams said the LNP had bungled the pay rise issue from start to finish. He was pleased that the union movement had played its part in exposing the LNP pay grab. “Today’s comments from Deputy Premier Seeney have revealed that the LNP government quite clearly knew from the start that it had the power to not accept the pay rise. “And his comments last week that the LNP MPs had legal advice that they no choice but to award themselves a $57,000 pay rise have now been revealed by Queenslanders as pure deceit,” he said. Mr Seeney’s backflip today finally came after reports that Premier Campbell Newman’s increased salary of $400,000 would mean he would earn as much as US President Barack Obama. “The Attorney-General should also stand beside Jeff Seeney and share the blame for this chaotic bungle,” Mr Battams said. “The whole sorry episode will raise further concerns among Queenslanders about the LNP’s handling of matters much more complex than fairly straightforward matters like pay rises,” he said. Issues such as the electoral reform laws should also be reconsidered by Parliament if they were conceived by the same legislative minds that sparked the pay rise issues, he said.
