People regularly say that the borders in the Middle East drawn after World War I are artificial. What they generally seem to be referring to with this word artificial is that they were drawn by humans and consequently less real. The use of this term also, however, suggests that borders elsewhere are somehow natural. The reality, however, is quite different. The borders across the globe have been invented and are simultaneously quite real. They exist and to varying extents regulate migration. This video gives one perspective on just how fluid the borders were accustomed to seeing as natural or permanent really have been over the centuries. War and occupation have been humanitys most powerful cartographers; much of the changes youll see in this video were a consequence of them.
