People seem to be loving the pope for this. And, to be fair to him, its a rational mindset hes taking. But at the deeper level, this is simply an attempt to make an outdated and dying belief system slightly more popular. To me, this is essentially the Mafia appointing a new leader, and this new leader holds a book that the Mafia follows on how and why to bomb buildings, kill people, and steal property while verbally espousing peace and non-aggression. At the end of the day, though the Pope is right to tend toward rationality and science, the book that the institution he leads founded themselves upon is in complete contradiction to rationality and science, and an attempt to reform the public image of the Catholic Church and its tenants is just that--an attempt for the sake of an oppressive and powerful institution, not an honest attempt to persuade people to science. If the Pope wanted to do that, hed get rid of his fortune and gifts that came with the position, denounce Catholicism, and lead a science education campaign.
