People sometimes ask what is my problem with contemporary Republicans, and mainly the reason is a sincere lack of sympathy for the working poor. Not to whitewash how little contemporary Democrats do for those less fortunate - but at least they pay some lip service to issues of poverty and the working poor. Life is hard. Being vilified just for being poor, or treated as stupid for not being rich only makes a tough life harder. A clearer sense of what it means to be poor, and having the knowledge or experience of how easy it is to have simple things ruin a familys financial security would (hopefully) change hearts and minds.
