People talk about Six Degrees of Separation, but another aspect is the time element. This recording session info from 1965 was quite a surprise to me. In 1967 and 1968 I was the organist for a Reno based show and recording group called Jack Bedient and the Chessmen (Jack Bedient — lead vocalist and guitar; Kevin Woods — vocal and lead guitar; Bill Britt — vocal and bass guitar; Irl Orr — drums; Dennis Hayes — Hammond B3 organ). We were produced and recorded by two people in Hollywood by the name of Bill Silva and Jerry Fuller. Our records were release by Columbia. The sessions were done by Jack with beautiful arrangements and lush orchestrations by Al Capps (I think). Jerry Fuller was also producing Gary Puckett and The Union Gap at the same time. I knew that Jerry Fuller wrote Travelin Man — the Ricky Nelson hit and had produced and worked with tons of other artists, but I did not know he was behind The Knickerbockers’ hit “Lies” as this recording sheet shows. One of my favorite memories from 1968 was when we played at Diamond Lil’s in Riverside, California, during the time we were in the southland so Jack could record. Jerry Fuller came out to the club and got up on the stage and performed Travelin’ Man with us.
