People tend to look at the “outside appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Because we are unable to see the future and what will be, we fix most of our attention on what is and what has been. God, on the other hand, lives beyond the element of time, so He is focused mostly on what is still to be. This has huge implications for us—and for our future. Because we have a very limited awareness, confined within the past and the present, we tend to conclude that our future must somehow emerge from what has been or what is currently true of our life. We think the future is determined by what precedes it. But our hope for a brighter future rests on this simple truth: God has the power and the desire to make a future for us based on His plans for us—rather than on our own history. Do some things that happen now have consequences for the future? Yes. But they do not determine our future...
