People who arent from Chicago tend not to know that we have the second largest Mexican American population of any city in the US next to LA. That means that there is no shortage of outstanding taco joints and my favorite for late nights is Arturos. Im sure that they have a zillion items on their menu that are amazing but I got to confess that Ive only ever ordered Tacos Al Pastor. Why? When something is that freaking good, there is simply no reason to deviate. NONE! Here are some other things I LOVE about Arturos 1) Because the neighborhood is not really known for bars, the douchebag factor is cut by about 90%. You get only the most dedicated late night drunks along with a large representation of real Mexicans which is always a positive sign for any type of ethnic fare. (i.e. having members of that ethnicity eating there) 2) On Sunday mornings, nobody is supposed to be able to sell booze in the city. When I used to work as a bartender, wed go to Arturos after closing the local bars on a Saturday night and the wonderful folks at Arturos would serve us beer in those red plastic restaurant cups. God Bless them! 3) If you go to Arturos early enough, you can go across the street to Margies Candies for some of the best homemade ice cream in the universe. I normally wouldnt pick banana ice cream as my first choice but at Margies, it is too good to describe with actual words.
