People who argue that the minimum wage shouldnt be $15/hr based on - TopicsExpress

People who argue that the minimum wage shouldnt be $15/hr based on their own subjective valuation of a particular service job piss me off. Forget for a moment the obvious fact that having a low minimum wage necessitates increased dependence on public services and welfare. Forget for a moment that communities and states which increase their minimum wage see marked improvements in quality of life and economic indicators. Forget the numerous other intangible benefits of a living wage which dollars and cents fiscal hawks often conveniently ignore in order to prop up their miserable, debunked zero-sum theories. Lets simply focus on the fact that it is an ethical travesty for people in the modern to work 40+ hours a week, and without purchasing anything beyond the basic necessities for life, end up spiraling into debt, poverty and homelessness. $15/hour still isnt enough. If minimum wage had increased with inflation since its inception, it would now be $21.60. If minimum wage had increased proportionately to corporate salaries, it would probably be somewhere closer to $50/hour or higher.
