People who consistently seek justice -- as a volunteer, or working - TopicsExpress

People who consistently seek justice -- as a volunteer, or working in public health, the clergy, social work, care for the elderly and disabled, or any number of other low paying jobs -- often look into the faces of people believe the quest is foolish, and are certain they, themselves, will never need help. And those who need help, but care very passionately about, pretty exclusively, themselves. We talk about The Greatest Generation. I was raised by two of them I was taught the rock solid moral values of doing every possible thing I could for myself, sensible compassion for all those currently struggling -- not just the ones I know personally -- and gratitude for help that I would inevitably need myself, some time, somehow. I hear plenty of words thrown around about one or another of these, but seldom all three equally. Many seem to pick one and build a manipulative, adversarial message around it: Pity the helpless disadvantaged, is thrown up against get off your lazy crippled butt and work hard like I did. From either end, that is no approximation of what made my parents generation great.
