People who post messages about their emotional state on social - TopicsExpress

People who post messages about their emotional state on social media such as Facebook could be unwittingly affecting the mood of their friends, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of California San Diego looked at more than a billion online messages from 100 million people in the US from January 2009 to March 2012. They used weather records to see what type of status updates were posted in cities experiencing rain. However, they used an automated text analysis system so they could not see the content of the messages and so that any updates specifically concerning the weather were eliminated. It was found that bad weather directly influenced the emotional content of the messages - the number of negative posts rose by 1.16 per cent, while the number of positive comments dipped by 1.19 per cent.
