People with Disability prepare for campaign about public needs Disability Working Group press release 22 October 2013 Disability Working Group Members will hold a campaign to raise awareness about challenges to inclusion for people with disability, such as public accessibility. This campaign will focus on Comoro Bridge and other infrastructure with very poor accesses for people with disability, which creates difficulties in their daily life. The campaign should motivate and encourage communities, families and people with disability themselves on how to respect the rights of people with disability. The campaign will also ask Governments to commit to inclusive development in their programs. This Friday,25 October 2013, DWG Members will come together in Comoro near Comoro Bridge to raise their voices about accessibility and disability rights. The campaign will include music, speeches, marches and information sharing about accessibility and disability rights. It will last all morning through lunchtime. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. DWG Members are excited to hold this campaign because it will help officials and the public understand disability issues that right now are still hiding in society. “The Government, especially the Ministry of Public Works, needs to make public infrastructure accessible to all people, including people with disability,” said Gaspar Afonso, the Member from HDMTL, an organization for people who are blind and have low vision. Mr Joaozito dos Santos, as DWG Vice Chairperson, said “This campaign is a very important event. Through this event we will give suggestions to the Government about how to build infrastructure without forgetting accessibility for all: not only for people without disability but also people living with disability. And we will motivate the community to understand how people with disability live.” “We hope that Government representatives will take this issue seriously. Timor has a National Disability Policy but we haven’t seen much action yet. We hope Ministries and Secretaries of State will implement their action plans about the issues facing people with disability,”said DWG Chairperson Joaquim Soares.
