People with dementia are often terrified of the shower. So learn - TopicsExpress

People with dementia are often terrified of the shower. So learn to deal with that by being kind, accepting, cunning and manipulative. Handheld shower only please. Starting at the feet, with verbal warnings. Soothing words, lots of checking in with them. Does that feel okay, honey? Is that too warm? Maybe leave hair-washing altogether while you figure out what might work. I never added it to a shower. I kept it separate. Basin hair wash? Sure. Hair salon hairwash? Even better. Even the gentlemen often go for that one. Maybe youre able to have a bath aide come in and do that stuff. Theyre almost always more successful than family caregivers. Do you know why? Because family caregivers radiate anxiety and tension around the bathing of their reluctant person. Bath aides have no emotional investment detectable to that sensitive dementia radar. So everyone relaxes.
