People with limited understanding of technology are writing scary articles about terms of service for the Facebook mobile messenger app. My rule of thumb in life is, if someone writes anything about how we should all be very afraid of anything, they either dont know what theyre talking about, or its link bait. Terms of service for any App can sound really crazy if you dont understand why the App needs those permissions. One of the permissions the Messenger App needs to function is to call phone numbers and send SMS messages on your behalf. This isnt, as one writer suggested, giving Facebook permission to make calls or send texts without you involved. Its so that, for example, if youre chatting with someone on Messenger and decide it should be a voice call, you can initiate that call from within the Messager App making the App and your experience a better one. Other people are objecting to App constellation, the process of separating functionality out from a single App to a suite of apps that work together, but also independently. This is really a good thing, both for privacy reasons and for functionality. The Facebook Messenger is a GREAT App for communication, but it doesnt have much in common with status sharing on Facebook. It can operate under permissions that Facebook might not need, and the reverse is true. The changes Facebook is making to its mobile suite of Apps are being made for legitimate technical reasons that will ultimate give us the best user experience Facebook coders can deliver. When someone tries to tell you how scary that is, its that writer who is the problem--not Facebook.
