Peppermint Candy. ( Korean, 1999) Peppermint Candy opens with the hero Yonghu meeting his friends on a gathering after 20 years. He went totally mental and chaotic which led him to kill himself on the train track and bringing the viewers in chronological orders of his eventual end. The story is a powerful one where the director criticize the South Korean military system and its complex history, often not part of South Korean success story and then analyze its masculity in post military system. Basically holding up a mirror to its societys struggle. The movie is heart-breaking where were curious, then a witness to a man subjected and then broken by the chosen system of his society. A product of its politics. STELLAR acting by the anti-hero protagonist Sol Kyung Gu. A movie is a powerful vehicle when it tries to be honest to its history. 4/5
