Perceptions by: Cyndy B.Wilber. A child lives in squallor, Searching amongst the garbage heaps For a scrap of food for a meal And feels blessed when his search succeeds. He brings his find home and shares it with a grateful family. A child lives in comfort & security Is denied his wish for the latest video game Slams the door to his own room And sulks Thinking he is the most abused child in the world. A child shelters under a scrap of cardboard From the heat of the sun And thinks himself blessed to find such shade And invites another to share his good fortune. A child turns on the fan in his room Complaining loudly how much nicer an air conditioner would be If only someone cared for his comfort. A child sits at his mothers grave Gently smoothing the soil above with his fingers Telling her of how he is going to make her proud And how he is taking care of his siblings... A child curses at his mother Because she required him to do his chores Not knowing she was in pain from a recent injury Kept to herself so as not to worry him. A child remembers his life Both the good and the bad And thanks God he has made it this far With friends & family who care about him. A child thinks on his life Sees little good and only needs How he never got all the things he wanted Was made to do chores he hated And how nobody ever understood him... A child grows up Strong in value and grateful for life Despite the hardships he has faced He has appreciation in his heart And so teaches this to his children. A child grows up Self-absorbed, unthankful and resentful Remembering only how his wants were told No His desires denied And never seeing the sacrifices made on his behalf And so teaches his children. A new generation begins Taught to be thankful for every gift To look for the seed of good in every action To have ready hands to help another And the world learns of peace and love. A new generation begins Taught to take what they want When they want it Not to put anyone elses desires before their own Never seeing the sacrifices of others And the world learns of war and hate. When things happens in your life Do you look for the thread of good, Learn a lesson, and move on To make yourself feel better Or To make yourself feel better Do you try to find someone to blame, to hurt in return Then hold on to decades old memories as reasons to hate? Perception is everything...
