Perfect Pitch? A few years ago, I remember Humor columnist Dave Barry writing a thing about how when a crowd chants “air ball” at a basketball game, for some odd reason they always chant it in the same key. F to D. Dave is one of my humor gurus along with David Letterman and Edward Abbey. My dad was my first humor influence and that was a problem. Now, my dad was one of the finest men that ever lived, but his sense of humor was, to say the least, corny. So I had to reform with the help of Dave and Dave and Edward. But I digress really a lot. So one day I tried chanting “air ball” then ran to the keyboard to see which notes I had chanted, and sure enough, F to D! Amazing. I don’t know what to make of that. Another thing I notice is that If I am in a good and cooperative mood, say when I’m hiking along, and I meet another hiker and they say “hel-lo” that I then say “hel-lo” in the exact same pitch as the stranger, which always makes me feel dumb, like I can’t be enough of a man and individual to say “hel-lo” in my own pitch. So next time I meet a stranger on the trail and they say “hel-lo” I’m going to respond with “Air Ball” in a completely different key and see what happens.
