Perfect point! We always say, there are many roads that will take us to Toronto... choices, choices, choices... Remember that respecting other peoples way of thinking requires us to expect they will reciprocally respect our way of thinking. Without that assumed foundation to our interactions, we are not respecting our own way of thinking in the first place. If we believe in equal fairness--in equal rights, equal justice, equal respect, then logic requires, that we require of others, mutual-and-reciprocal exchange. If we are giving respect to others without receiving respect from others, there is no mutual respect in that. This is a self awareness that we learn by participating in our personal Self-to-self relationship of respectful, shared actions/interactions.
