Perfectly intelligent people occasionally mess up PASSED and PAST. - TopicsExpress

Perfectly intelligent people occasionally mess up PASSED and PAST. This one is easy to figure out; just remember that passed is the past tense of the verb to pass. She passed us by works just fine. It can also be used as an adjective, as in that was a passed basketball (awkward, but its correct). Past, on the other hand, is a preposition (quarter past two), an adverb (they ran past us), a noun (nostalgia belongs to the past), and an adjective (passed is the past tense of the verb to pass). If you can get PAST the confusion, you will have PASSED on to the next step in your understanding (unless you have PASSED away, in which case your knowledge is now a thing of the PAST).
