Performing first aid and responding to a traumatic injury are two - TopicsExpress

Performing first aid and responding to a traumatic injury are two different things. Although both may require the use of bandages and other medical supplies, you wont stop severe bleeding from a severed artery with just a bandaid. Hemorrhage control requires enough pressure to slow down the bleeding enough to allow the blood to clot. The best technique and bandage to use depends on what type of damage has been done to the tissue, veins and arteries. In trauma, when the injury is large or involves a major artery...the saying, "You will bleed out before you breath out is true" Arterial blood is bright red... it shoots out. The pressure built up from the heart beating is was forces it out. Locate the closest pressure point above the wound and apply direct pressure. It may take all your strength to clamp it down...and the casualty may yell out...but keep the pressure on the point. (Google pressure points) We teach this in the course. If the bleeding doesnt stop with in 1 - 2 min. Consider using a pressure bandage or Tourniquette. You learn the how and why in the course. Always call 911 first or be ready to transport them to an ER. Even though you might stop the bleeding, the loss of blood causes shock. Come back tomorrow for the rest of the lesson.
