Perfumed Once and Forever The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There are seven persons whom Allah will shade on a Day when there is no shade but His. They are … a man whom a beautiful woman of high status seduces but he rejects her by saying, ‘I fear Allah’…” [Sahih Bukhari] There was a young man who always smelt of the most fragrant musk and amber. Once someone said to him, “You always wear such exotic scents, you must be wasting so much money on such expensive perfumes.” The young man replied, “I swear by Allah, never in my life have I bought perfume or applied it!” The man then asked where the scent was coming from and how. The young man replied that this was a secret that should not be divulged. The man insisted that he be told since it may be something that would benefit him. So the young man shared his story. “In my youth I was very handsome. My father was a trader who dealt in household goods. I would sit with him in the shop. Once an old woman came to the shop and bought some things and told my father to send me along with her to her house to bring back the money she owed for the items. So I went with the old woman and came to an extremely beautiful house. In a dazzlingly lovely room sat a gorgeous young woman on a bed. “As soon as she saw me she turned her attention to me and invited me to sin with her. I refused to fulfill her wish so she grabbed me and pulled me towards her. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) put an idea in my head as to how I could save myself from her, so I said to her that I needed to use the bathroom. She immediately ordered her maids and servants to clean the bathroom for me. I went to the bathroom, relieved myself, and then rubbed my waste on my body and clothes. I then came out in this condition. When she saw me she ordered for me to be immediately thrown out of the house for I must be mad. “I had one dirham with me. I bought a bar of soap with it and then took a bath in the canal and washed my clothes with it before putting them on again. I kept what had happened a secret. When I fell asleep that night I saw an angel in my dream who said to me, ‘Allah wishes to give you the glad tidings of Paradise and in exchange for the ploy you used to save yourself from sin you are being presented with this perfume.’ That perfume was rubbed over my entire body and it is that scent which engulfs me, emanating from my body and clothes all the time, and which people can smell even today. All praise is due to Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” [At-Targheeb wa At-Tarheeb]
