Perhaps with a nod to the recent happenings in Lamu, where violence linked to the illegal allocation of land has claimed close to a hundred lives, panelist Christopher Gitari, who lecturers at Strathmore, said Kenya cannot afford to delude itself that peace is possible when part of its population is unhappy with how it’s been treated by the state. If communities feel that the state has not prevented their rights from being violated or has violated them itself, then there is a breakdown of relations than can lead to violence, said Gitari. Put simply, if you don’t address past violations, then you are not safe. That’s an excerpt from a recently-published piece on our website. What do you make of Gitari’s statement?
