Permaculture stresses the importance of leaving the soil undisturbed wherever possible. We can see the template of a no-dig garden in nature itself. In a natural ecosystem, such as a forest, there is rarely an element that digs the ground, yet seeds germinate and establish new plants and the forest system flourishes without any digging. A permaculture gardener can also replicate this natural system in his plot.
