Permission has been granted for a new medical centre in Ashby. The district council has granted permission, subject to a section 106 agreement, for a new medical centre at Holywell Spring Farm, off Burton Road at the edge of Ashby. The new medical centre will allow the relocation and expansion of the existing Ashby Health Centre in North Street, which is no longer fit for purpose. The new two-storey medical centre will include a pharmacy and on-site parking. In a planning statement submitted with the application, it says: The existing health centre is nearly 40 years old and the building has had only minimal maintenance provided in recent years in order to keep the building open. There are a significant number of problems which have worsened in recent years. For example, there are problems with damp ceilings and walls in large parts of the building, as well as longstanding sewerage problems near the staff toilets. The existing health centre does not have sufficient consulting rooms to meet the requirements of patients and restricts the number of services that can be offered. The patient waiting area is not of sufficient size to accommodate all patients during busy times and does not lend itself to confidential conversations with patients. Of most concern is the lack of modern clinical consulting rooms for the GPs and the absence of sufficient space to carry out procedures and treatments which are increasingly required. The additional population that will be generated from the housing growth will add further pressure on the services provided by the existing Ashby Health Centre, further exacerbating the problems with the existing facility.
