Persecution continues to be a hallmark of the Church. Today it is the Christians in the Mideast and Africa who are persecuted, exiled and put to death for their faith, by the fanatics of Islam who do not know “the love of God in Christ Jesus,” and who like the Romans and Jews of St. Paul’s time, oppose it violently. In the West, persecution is currently not violent and bloody, but it does not need to be—Christians are easily seduced into apostasy by political correctness and superficiality. Western Christians make no impact and present no challenge to the secular culture around them, comfortably acquiescing to its demands. Christ is reduced to a nice guy, and any concept of spiritual warfare, battle, or conflict is expunged from the Christian vocabulary. There is nothing “super-victorious” about Christianity in the West, nothing seen by it, in fact, that needs conquering.
