Personal Trainers are Experts Although it should go without saying, gym-goers often overlook the fact that personal trainers are experts at what they do. Personal trainers have chosen to pursue their passion because they have a lot of experience with fitness, know the value of being active, and want to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. For many, the quest to attain a healthier self can be a tricky endeavor. Those new to fitness approach fitness with the mindset that it is merely the result of hard work, determination, and hours in the gym—nothing could be farther from the truth. Fitness is the result of learning, practicing technique, and incorporating positive lifestyle choices both inside and outside the gym. Getting used to a holistic approach to fitness can be a jarring transition, and that’s why many begin working out with vigor, burn out, and soon relapse into old lifestyle patterns. Personal trainers are teachers who can keep you mentally motivated and physically fresh by periodically raising your work-rate and slowly altering diet and lifestyle. That’s not to say that you can’t achieve wonderful results on your own, but those new to exercise will always benefit from an experienced coach. Even those with considerable experience in a given field can benefit from the tutelage of even more experienced coaches: professional athletes, bodybuilders, artists, writers, laborers…everyone! Consider two friends with similar athletic backgrounds who want to start playing tennis: one works alone for an hour a day, three times a week, the other works with a tennis coach within the same parameters. After a few weeks who do you imagine will be the better player? The answer is obvious. Personal training isn’t any different. Personal Training is Personal Personal Training is different from group training because it’s personal. While the social differences between personal and group training may appear obvious, they are just as different from a physiological and results-driven perspective. Personal training is not for people who are “uncomfortable” in a group training environment; it is for people who may not yet know their bodies well enough to group-train, for those who prefer a custom-tailored approach, and/or for those who are looking for more instruction in every respect. Everyone’s body is as unique as their personality, and everyone is at a different stage in their fitness journey. Personal training takes each person’s individualism into account in a way that group training, by definition, can not. Personal trainers will work with each individual like an individual; not every client will do the same workouts, stretches, or follow the same dietary guidelines. Unless you already know exactly what you want and how to get it, personal training is a great opportunity to learn more about your body and see just what you can do. And even if you do know a lot about fitness, there is always plenty more to explore! Personal Training is Training This one might appear silliest of all, but don’t overlook the fact that personal training is training, not “exercise.” If you can’t answer when asked why you’re doing one exercise instead of another, or don’t know what you’re going to be doing next time you come into the gym, you are lacking the components which comprise the foundation of training. Everyone knows how to exercise; just flail around aimlessly and you’re doing it. If that was all it took to get in shape, everyone would be comically fit and personal trainers everywhere would be out of a job. Clearly, there’s a lot more to it. The three primary distinctions between exercise and training are purpose, context, and progression. When you just exercise, you are merely performing movements without a greater understanding of why (purpose). You are also lacking the context in which to view the big picture behind what you have done (or will do). Personal trainers will have you do an exercise, explain why you are doing it, tell you what’s important about it, and how it compliments what you will be doing in the future. Once you become truly proficient at an exercise, personal trainers will help you progress to harder exercises, or modify an exercise by changing the parameters associated with it. Now that is personal training! For more information on personal training in Watertown, contact Forever Fit.
