Personal Wellness Accountability – July 21, 2013 This morning I weighed 257.2 pounds, up .6 pound from last Sunday. This week, I went for one run of 4.81 kilometres in 30 minutes 7 seconds. I joined the Indigenous Action Run with the AFN Youth Council. I managed to golf two full rounds. Again, I missed my gym workouts. This past week, I walked 88,667 steps (119, 127 steps last week), 45 floors (134 floors last week), and 42.34 miles (58.02 miles last week). It seems that I have hit a wall when it comes to my weight loss plan. For the past month or more, I have hovered at 257 pounds give or take .5 pound. It has been a challenge for me to get to the gym for my core strength workouts. I have missed the gym for three weeks. I need to find a gym with outlets everywhere. I need to take the same approach to gym workouts that I did with walking. I must start slowly and then build up. I want to increase my fitness and must change my habits. Almost two weeks ago, I went for a run and my late Dad helped me with unfinished business. My Dad gave me my life back and told me to do whatever I wanted to do. He told me to do that work with love, truth, respect, and understanding. He told me to govern myself from a place of forgiveness. By forgiving myself first – I would then be able to forgive others. This very powerful healing gave me a newfound sense of freedom, strength, and a deep purpose. This past week, in the lead up to and the conduct of the Assembly of First Nations Annual General Meeting, I saw a gifted human being put my Dad’s teaching into action. I witnessed our National Chief Shawn Atleo carrying out his work from a place of love, truth, respect, and understanding. Our National Chief did not hit back when others said harsh words about him. He ignored reporters that promoted division in an attempt to distract him from his job. He did not give into ill-informed editorials telling him how to do his job. Shawn carried out his work as National Chief from love, truth, respect, and understanding. Shawn showed me the gift of forgiveness. I thank you Shawn for becoming the National Chief that so many of us believed that you would be. Thank you for showing me that a mere human being (as opposed to a Saint) could carry out Dad’s challenging teaching. I am very proud of National Chief Shawn Atleo. The Creator gave every human being a gift. The Creator wants us to become the best human being that we could be. Blessed with ancestral teachings, ceremonies, and rituals, we have everything that we need to recover from a century of colonial thinking and racist assimilation policies. From a place of love, we will make a better place for our children and grandchildren. From truth, we will identify our challenges and we will look for opportunities for constructive change. From respect of ourselves and of our ancestral teachings – we will respect others and engage others in our work to create a better world for all of our children. From understanding, we will appreciate the gifts and the frailties of others. From understanding, we will learn to forgive. We will forgive ourselves for human weakness. Then we will forgive others. In this coming week, I will work on carrying out my Dad’s teaching. I will join a gym and get working on my fitness. Like last week, I will eat more salads. Have a healthy week all! Dk:
