Personally, Im not a huge fan of charging people for bags, because most people say no, and walk out with an awkward armload of merchandise. We received a letter from the Mendocino Solid Waste Management Authority on why we must charge. Heres the recap. Why we charge for paper bags: 1. The short version: We are subject to daily fines up to $500.00 2. The long version: The charge for paper bags allows store to recover the cost that you actually incur to buy the bags. Unless such a charge is levied, the customers who bring their own re-usable bag will be forced to subsidize free bags for others. Without the incentive for a switch to re-usable bags, a ban on plastic bags would result in a big increase in the use of paper bags. While paper is much less harmful to the environment if it becomes litter, paper bags require more energy to produce and transport.
