Perth nurse Kate Rowan-Robinson, 33, is already registered with Aspen and hoping to join the fight against Ebola in Sierra Leone. Her family, including 10-year-old son Reilly, back her decision to volunteer — though she has no illusions about the risk. At least 120 health workers have contracted the virus in Sierra Leone alone, with few surviving. “I became a nurse to help people in less fortunate circumstances than my own,’’ she said. “There are people in need in West Africa, I’m in a position to do something, so … it’s not a hard decision.” Ms Rowan-Robinson said the infection risk of Ebola was manageable for medical staff with the proper training and protective gear. But she was all too aware there was no treatment for the virus, and she would be a long way from home should the worst happen. Asked if that concerned her, she said: “To a small degree. But I come with a firm understanding of the risk involved and of the ways to mitigate that risk. I am not the ordinary Joe on the street in that regard.’’ Watch nurse Kate Rowan-Robinson interviewed on Channel Tens The Project in their story on Australias ebola response at tenplay.au/channel-ten/the-project/2014/11/5
