Perumal Murugan received an IFA grant for research towards the writing of a novelised history of Tiruchenkode in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. In the course of writing a historical account of Tiruchenkode, the author documented references to the town in literature, folklore and mythology, analysed the town’s design and studied its ritual and religious life. Madhorubagan (One Part Woman) was burnt by Hindutva outfits and the author announced that the author was dead and would never write again. Shame on those who squash uncomfortable voices. India Foundation for the Arts condemns the silencing of writers, artists and citizens.
