Peter Murray (ex employee of Naspers) tells how NASPERS proceeded to get rid of their employees 12 years ago. If you are still sitting on the fence and must decide if you are going to support this battle or not, read this story and decide whether you can still afford to let them get away with their mafia-methods. PETER: "I was one of those white men, whom Dan Roodt refers to, who were dismissed by Naspers in order to increase their profit. I was not the only victim. Our Newspaper-staff of 100 people was so eliminated that only eight Sales Representatives (the people who brought in the money) and two journalists were left. Our sisters-newspaper in Kroonstad was closed as well as was the printing press in Kroonstad. Naspers left literally hundreds of families without an income. But even more so, Naspers refused to pay out pension to their long-term loyal employees. Employees, who were in their fifties, were retrenched in time before they could reach the age of sixty and therefore would have had qualified for pension. The factory manager and I, respectively, were one month and two months short to qualify for pension. We had to be satisfied with a retrenchment amount. I was forbid by Naspers to consult a lawyer. I hope the men at the Head Office in Cape Town’s day will come that they will be paid back for this. I later joined the MWU and stated my case with them. My representative came to my office, but he was thrown out of the building by a member of Naspers, who harshly asked me: ‘Haven’t I told you clearly that we do not want ANY lawyers or Labour Unions here?’ Fortunately my wife belongs to a good Medical Fund, because I do not know what otherwise would have happened. Since then I have had 8 or 9 operations which I would not have been able to undergo if my wife was not on a Medical Aid. That Medical Aid covered all my operations 100%. Some of the operations were maybe not so necessary, but the others were absolutely necessary. I am a handicapped person today and walk with difficulty. I had to do job-hunting and it was not so easy. That alternative work was also not ideal and I earned very little. It has now been 12 years since I have stopped working at Naspers and we have survived only just. I try to spend as less as possible, because there is no money for luxuries. For years my wife and I do not go on holidays anymore. " NB: For those who want to know, this story has been published with permission.
