Peters Gardening tip of the month: (Courtesy of Samford Branch) Do you have some plants in pots that you neglected to plant and have gone ‘leggy’ or have you seen some straggly plants in the discount section of your local nursery and wondered whether they are worth buying? Don’t despair: as long as they are still healthy (and not diseased), try a technique known as long-stem planting. Trim off any lower leaves and dig a hole much deeper than the height of the pot (sometimes two or three times the depth) and backfill so that the top of the plant looks like a ‘normal’ planting. Because the main root ball is much lower in the soil profile, long-stem plants are often more drought resistant.
