Peter’s opening comments follow the theme of trials and testing’s that come to all of us. He reminds us that when our faith is proven through a trial, it’s more valuable than the purest of gold. That kind of faith brings praise, glory and honor to Jesus (1:6, 7). Peter gives us 4 Keys to walking through the trials that come (1:13 – 15). #1. “Prepare your minds,” literally refers to the origin of our thought life. The NKJV “the loins of your mind” which refers to that area of our mind where thoughts originate from. We have that responsibility through guarding and being selective what we allow to enter our minds. The second half of that phrase reminds us to be ready for action. There’s a daily destiny for each of us. As our minds are prepared, whatever comes, we can be victorious and walk through it. #2. “Keep sober in spirit,” means to be discreet in the deliberations from the mind that enter our spirit man. #3. “Fix our hope. . . on. . Grace,” because it is “by grace” we are saved, not of ourselves.” Legalism will destroy faith and hope. Peter speaks of a concern he had that believers would revert back to a law mentality that based itself on works without any faith. #4. “Be holy in all our behavior,” that we be morally blameless in all the activity of life, not just in the ceremonial rituals of life. As we walk these out, we’ll endure the trials that strengthen and establish our faith.
