Petes tip of the day: June 16, 2014 Gary Schena of Studio 12 given excellence award for his pottery Hatteras Island artist Gary Schena was recently honored at the Molly Fearing Art Show, receiving an excellence award for his pottery. The 17th annual Molly Fearing Show is presented by the Dare County Arts Council. The annual Mollies features an eclectic mix of local and regional visual arts. This year the show was held at the newly renovated Dare Arts Center, located at 300 Queen Elizabeth Avenue downtown Manteo. The opening reception on May 4 at DCAC was attended by over 200 artists and art lovers. The Peoples Choice Award was selected that afternoon, and awards were presented for Best in Show, Excellence Awards, and Honorable Mentions. Hatteras Island resident, Gary Schena, co-owner of Studio 12 in Avon with his wife Carolyn, received an excellence award for his 20-inch pottery platter that he created on a potter’s wheel. This year’s Molly Fearing Judge Michael H. Drought is the Director of the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University in Greenville. Born in Illinois and raised in Wisconsin, he received his MFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mr. Drought’s paintings are in numerous private and public collections, including the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Va., and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va. Drought said of Schenas work, It is difficult to create a pottery piece like this, and Schena did so beautifully. He shows a mastery of technique.” Gary Schena began throwing pottery on the wheel in 2003 when he and his wife move to Hatteras Island. Although Gary holds degrees in business and accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant, he always had an interest in pottery. “My wife gave me a small potter’s wheel as a gift the first year we moved to Hatteras,” says Gary. He has since graduated to a “real wheel” and has never looked backed. “This is a real honor, Gary says. I love working in clay and I always challenge myself to make my pottery as light and durable as possible. The 20-inch platter that I submitted to the Molly Fearing Show was a fun challenge, trying to make an extra large platter that was light as well as functional. It took three attempts before I came out with something I was satisfied with.” Gary and his Wife Carolyn own Studio 12, a working studio and gallery offering art classes and walk in experience to play in several different mediums including glass, and mosaics. The Studio 12 gallery is filled with over 25 different local and regional artists, including Gary’s pottery and Carolyn’s paintings, jewelry, and glass fusion. The Schena’s have been in business since 2004. Studio 12 is located at MP 55 in Avon studio12hatteras. For more information, call 252-995-7899.
