Exactly a week after his appointment, Abanilla believes that this is one way “to put everybody on the same page.” “Kailangan naming i-define ang roles. Kaya sana mas maintindihan nila kung ano ang role na gusto namin sa kanila,” Abanilla told Solar Sports Desk. “Alam naman natin napaka-talented ng players namin, kaya they’ll feel lahat sila go to guy--- it won’t work that way,” he added. The youthful mentor added that even his coaching staff, which recently underwent major face-lifting, will also be given respective roles. “It’s something that I have to deal with -- malalaman ko kung magwo-work. Pero so far tingin ko okay naman,” he said. “My intentions are really pure.” “Wala naman akong ibang gusto kundi pagandahin lang rin ang takbo ng team.” As for the transition stage, Abanilla believes that familiarity with one another will be a good advantage for him when he starts steering the team. “Ang maganda rito—kakilala ko sila, kakila rin nila ako. Mas madali ang transition pag ganun. Kaya I am hoping everything will fall into place,” he said. “Nasabi ko na sa kanila yung vision ko at kung anong klaseng team ang ini-expect ko before dumating yung August 14 (start of the third conference),” the coach added. Abanilla bared that he will not implement big changes in their system, rather he wants to focus on the strengths of his players. Solar Sports Desk has also learned that the Blaze Boosters have started training camp 3 weeks ago, where they have been implementing a thrice a week practices. “Pero ngayon 4 times a week na kami, next week baka maglimang araw na kami ng ensayo,” bared Abanilla, who is not new to handling the same team, which he coached for a few games in the 2010 Fiesta Cup finals. The Beermen, however, lost to the Alaska Aces in that series, 4-2. Abanilla, meantime, looks at the departure of Jay Washington as one big vacuum to fill. “Syempre, nawala si Jaywash. Pero sana mapunan yun ni Jason Deutschman,” said Abanilla of his new player who is still in the US.
