Ph.D. Graduate Student Position astroparticle physics Astroparticle Physics Group KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, Sweden Project: The successful applicant will join the group’s research on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). These are cosmic flashes of gamma-rays and are due to the largest known explosions in the Universe. Due to their huge brightness we are able to detect them from very large distances, thereby viewing the very early Universe. However, we do not yet know how the emission arises. This problem is therefore one of the most fundamental in high-energy astrophysics today. The aim of this thesis project is to tackle this problem by analysing and modelling observational data obtained from space- and ground-based facilities, in particular, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and future polarimetric missions. The analysis will be combined with in-depth theoretical considerations. The expected result will be better and deeper understanding of the radiation and particle acceleration processes involved in producing the GRBs. Much of the work will be carried out within international collaborations. Qualifications: A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in Astronomy, Physics or engineering Physics. A relevant degree project and experience of data analysis are considered as advantageous qualifications. The applicant should enjoy working as a part of a team and have strong oral and written communication skills and be proficient in English. Employment: Form of employment: Time limited. A PhD position is 4 years in duration. A position may be extended to compensate for Department duties (e.g. teaching up to 20%) up to a maximum of 5 years. Start date: According to agreement. Salary: The salary follows the directions provided by KTH.
