The Faculty of Theology is a non-denominational academic community. The mission of the Faculty is to conduct research in religion and its various manifestations, provide teaching based on this research and participate in societal discourse on both a national and international scale. The Faculty has received high marks in international research evaluations and exercises active cooperation with similar leading research institutes. The faculty hosts two Centres of Excellence in Research (2014-2019) funded by the Academy of Finland. The Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION IN THE FIELD OF NEW TESTAMENT / EARLY CHRISTIAN STUDIES for a 3–4 year period, to begin on 1.1.2014 at the latest. The appointed doctoral student will be situated at the Faculty of Theology, and will enter into an employment relationship with the University of Helsinki. The dissertation project will be carried out as part of the collective research project “Ritual and the Emergence of Early Christian Religion: A Socio-Cognitive Analysis” (REECR), funded by the Academy of Finland and directed by Risto Uro. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary team, consisting of a director of research (Risto Uro), who will also serve as the doctoral student’s supervisor, and of postdoctoral researchers, along with an international group of external advisors and collaborators. In addition to completing the dissertation work, the doctoral student will contribute to some extent to teaching and other academic activities, as determined by the Faculty. The appointee should hold a Master’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies or a related field (or the degree will be completed by December 2013 at the latest), and should show competence in studying the New Testament and early Christian sources. The applicant should propose a dissertation project related to the theme and methodology of the REECR research project, and should be prepared to adapt it according to the aims and objectives of the REECR project and to the allocation of work in the research team. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee should have good English skills. The doctoral student must complete his or her studies in accordance with the currently valid regulations for the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Theology (seehelsinki.fi/teol/tdk/english/studies/pg_degree_programmes.htm). If the appointee has not yet been granted the right to pursue a postgraduate degree in the field of theology or religious studies, he or she must receive the right to study before he or she can accept the position. The doctoral student is expected to commit to completing the doctoral degree within the required time-frame. In addition to the seminars and other activities organised by the REECR project, the student will be expected to participate in postgraduate training organised by the doctoral programme. The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience; at the beginning of doctoral studies the salary ranges from a minimum of 2 100 euro up to a maximum of 2 300 euro gross per month for a full-time position.
