PhD Studentship: PhD student for the CCAMBIO project (Climate Change and the Microbial Diversity in Antarctic). Centre for Protein Engineering, University of Liege, Belgium. Bacterial Physiology and Genetics, Cyanobacteria Group (coordinator of CCAMBIO) CCAMBIO (ccambio.ulg.ac.be) is a collaborative project funded by BELSPO (Belgian Science Policy) that aims to study microbial communities using NGS techniques in Antarctic lakes along a wide geographic and climatic gradient. Our goal is to contribute to the discovery of novel diversity and elucidate the role of the different food web components for the ecosystem functioning in Antarctic lakes. This PhD will work specifically on cyanobacteria. In depth analyses of microbial community composition using 454 next generation tagged-sequencing analyses of the rRNA genes are performed. Additionally, for a selection of taxa, multi-gene molecular phylogenies will be developed to study their evolutionary history. Moreover, functional data of microbial communities in one lake will be obtained by a metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Tasks: Study the diversity of cyanobacteria and perform the experiments described above Disseminate the results by participating to congresses and writing publications Support the coordination of the project, including writing reports, updating the website and organizing meetings Requirements: Master degree in biology, microbiology, biotechnology or a related field. Specialization in microbial molecular ecology is an advantage Previous experience with sequencing, DNA extraction, cultivation of microorganisms etc. Familiarity with next-generation sequencing is an asset. Good background and affinity for bioinformatics (UNIX, PERL5) Capacity of initiative and practical sense, team spirit Good knowledge of English (written and spoken), French is an advantage The position is available from 1st October and is initially funded for 2 years with the request...
