Phil Hanson has longed deserved this level of attention. However, I disagree in many respects with this review. Phils paintings were never flat footed (whatever that means). John Yau is struggling to explain this work predominately in terms of its subject matter. He focuses hard on simultaneously reading and looking, but would do better to set aside analysis and fall into the space and light. Experience them like music, like great poetry (not about great poetry), like much great painting. And I dislike the use of the word visionary, an attempt not to describe but to categorize--and certainly not the right category. This is an artist, working outside trends, evolving and maturing, who has his own voice. Rather than trying to justify its being critical ignored, just... luxuriate in the find. Feel the light, my friends.
