Sometimes I am inspired Sometimes I am insipid But on the whole my name is a four-letter word That will Phil your mouth With abbreviated-to-naught foulness Borne out on rushing winds That upswept Marilyn Monroe’s dress Before I said ‘it wasn’t me’, Yet we all know I was guilty. I am the primed wings Of Muhammad Ali’s butterfly Sailing blows Into the poker-faces of haters Who exode as soon as I explode Beneath sunny skies Which replaced my glass ceiling When I decided to go beyond What lay behind With upturned eyes Indwelt with the gleam of the prize. I believe in magic But not magicians Because we all conjure magic In one way or another Making us not magicians but gifts Spread upon the journey of life Roving between dawns twilight Whose expanses dance With the drift of destiny In the same way I experience infinite glory Being no one but me.
