Phil and Wendy are back on the road following their day off in Edinburgh... Day 77 Edinburgh to Edinburgh 15th July 1996 We closed the door on our last indoor accommodation of the trip and walked across Edinburgh with our packs to a campsite still very much inside the city but quite close to the Firth of Forth. It wasn’t much of a walk, more a city stroll really, but we were able to enjoy this delightful town at a leisurely pace rather than a gallop. I sat up until midnight last night finishing For Whom the Bell Tolls. It was a brutal read: gripping and utterly realistic, the prose every bit as fought-over as that scrap of war-torn Spain. I slept well and we both felt a lot fresher for our day off. I bought a new book in town, an account of the highland clearances, an appropriate choice for the country ahead. Wendy continued her tartan-fest by buying an Innes tie and scarf for her dad. We walked through some of the poorer parts of Edinburgh but didn’t feel remotely threatened. This campsite is full of backpackers: Edinburgh is obviously very much on the Interrailing circuit. We listened to a pair of Canadian tourists comparing notes on various cities they had visited on their travels: “Oh yea, and I did Oxford in two days”. What a wally! In the evening we took a bus back into town and saw Mission Impossible. We renamed it “Mission Incomprehensible” as it was arguably the most confusing and messy film we’ve ever seen; and what happened to all those delightful characters that used to bless the television series – their modern counterparts were utterly bland and impossible to distinguish from one another.
