Phil worked on his rocking chair and finished all the woodworking - TopicsExpress

Phil worked on his rocking chair and finished all the woodworking and the upholstery and it felt right to see this thing rock smoothly. Three years ago he only dreamed of this; that he would be able to make a chair like this. I think I’ve trained five hundred people to make this chair in the last 20 years. I feel my spirits lift. Here is the truth. Most of them only worked with wood using hand tools for nine days before I took them to this next level. I’d trained them in those nine days also. The joinery is traditional and designed to last about 300 years of daily use. My sense of wellbeing, that men and women took their hands, made a complex piece and took it home to use, comes from the fact that hands alone formed the joints, planed the wood, cut the leather and concluded what most rely on machines to do. It takes another nine days. It’s totally ethical, sustainable and, well, quite lovely.
