** Philadephia Suns Drexel Armory Tournament Recap** NOVEMBER 1, 2014 9 AM – 2 PM Mens A Division Championship - Suns over 5 Pillars (43-37) The cold rainy day did not bring a damper on the day as 9 teams began the day in 3 pools. Five Pillars looked like the team to beat as they were the top seed and won easily their first two pool games and playoff game by a combined 84 points. Five Pillars played fundamentally, spacing the floor, pushing the tempo, hitting shots and playing stingy defense. Qasier carried much of the scoring load, and 17-year old Shemail showed good energy at both ends. Jamil and Ali provided the veteran leadership throughout. The Suns’ play run-n-gun, with isolation that carried them to the 2nd seed. Steve Wu was the recipient and finisher of most of the plays, and Tuan Ho chipped in with an occasional highlight shot. Emil continues to handle well under pressure and San provided the mature floor direction. 5 Pillars led by 5 but the Suns clawed back in to tie at 17 just before halftime. The Suns held a slight advantage going into the last quarter of the game which later swelled to 8 with about 2 minutes left. Steve had 17 points and fouled out holding a 5 point lead with 5 Pillars shooting in the penalty. The free throw was missed and a few foul shots later, the Suns came away with the win. Mens B Division Championship - Knights over Expendables (46-33) Things didn’t look good for the Knights as in their 2nd pool game, they got a drubbing from the Fastball 18 team by 23 points. They did redeem themselves by winning their semi-final matchup with the Young Gunners in order to play the Expendables for the B championship. The Expendables path was not that easy. They were manhandled by 39 vs 5 Pillars, then a close contest loss to Young Gunners to become the last place seed. In the playoffs, they took care of business beating Falcons Red by 9, and a tough gritty win over Fastball B by 4. The Knights jumped out 12-0 to open the game, but led by Josh Chun’s (Expendibles) 9 first half points made it a close 5 point contest. Josh continued to rack up points finishing with more than half of his teams points with 17. The size of the Knights and the battle to get to the finals was insurmountable for the Expendables. Big Man, Ray Wang, led the way the entire tournament by clearing the boards, finishing lay-ups and making foul shots. Matt Moy led the way with 15 points, but his two straight threes, midway in the 2nd half seemed to put the game away. Congratulations to everyone! Thank you for participating and we’ll see you in the Spring!
