Philip Muhammad: As Salaam Alaikum. Brother Rasul Muhammad, is it improper to study while listening to music that is instrumental, such as classical or even soft jazz? Can music enhance our study? Rasul Muhammad: Walaikum - Salaam; Yes! I believe music can and does enhance not just study and reading but anything we do! The volume and tempo of the music is key. It must never be louder than your ability to focus your mind on what you are doing. Often people play music to literally distract them from problems and emotions they are unable to intellectually resolve or even want to deal with. While others may use music as a drug to take their minds somewhere their own undisciplined thoughts may not. I believe that as we cultivate righteous thought patterns, the chemicals the brain will secrete into our bodies will be so pleasurable that your entire BEING will become a living biological symphonic orchestra. Then you will only play additional music to enhance your different moods but even then, it will only be played as background ambiance in the key of your internal melody. When music is played to entertain it should be carefully thought out and purposefully selected as it carries within it the creative force to actualize, hypnotize and materialize thought. The problem with us today from a musical stand point is that we are out of harmony with the Spirit of GOD and HIS Creation (Nature). Most of the music we play and listen to from the beat, the chords and lyrics we sing are all our of sync with the Nature of PEACE. So, we do not get the best effect pending on ones choice of music. There is scientific evidence that supports the powerful and spiritual effects of classical symphonic music and Jazz also INDEGINOUS world music on the human brain waves and health. The greatest of all musical instruments is the human VOICE. The sound waves produced by the human voice are soul stirring and penetrate deeper than any other instrument known to man. The human being is ALLAHs greatest musical composition! In fact, you must know, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad said; Music, Color and Medicine is the essence of the true religion of ALLAH.
